Question about the toyota recall.?

The toyota recall was released after the acclerator became stuck on many models causing 5 deaths. Now I know that you can turn a car off that is still in gear, is there something I’m missing or were these people just too freaked out to think about that?

They were probably to freaked out. Once, a few weeks after a car wreak, all the breaks on my car failed at once, apparently from the wear and tear from the wreck, while I was tiring to make a turn, scared the hell out of me. It didn’t occur to me that I could have used the e-break to slow myself.

THere were 3 adults and one teen in the car.
I timed the 911 call from the time the operator started talking till the call stopped was about 14 seconds,
The time for when this incident started, determine there is a problem, for some one to find the cell phone dial 911, wait for it to ring then the 14 second…..
I’m sure the 911 operator thought it was a prank, his response with out any thought was, …cant you just turn the key off.
To your question were they too freaked out: They did have some thought process, thinking the 911 operator would be able to summons some sort of rescue vehicle to extract them from the moving vehicle.
The right answers would be
Push the car into neutral: That way you maintain your power steering and power breaks.
Turn the key off: You can still steer and break, just at a slightly increased effort level. With the adrenalin flowing, you wouldn’t be abel to tell the difference.

Auto-transmission, try to press the overdrive button to have the car at low gearing, should be able to reduce the speed, next shift to neutral (prepare to have the transmission burnt off), using the foot brake to stop the vehicle normally (Stopping distance will be longer).
Manual transmission, force fed the gear to lower gear, 2 or 3 first, then put to neutral, use the foot brake to stop the vehicle.
Switch off the engine may not be wise, as the brake is powered-assisted hydraulically and power-assisted steering.
