has anyone experienced a problem with their 2004 Toyota Prius brakes?

A year ago, on a cold drizzly morning, we drove to the coffee shop and parked our car. After coffee, I was carefully, slowly backing out when I realized that I had no brakes. I recall pushing on the brakes with all the pressure I could. I managed to go forward a few feet and realized there was still no brakes. Staying hard on the brakes with all the pressure I could apply, the car seemed to roll to a stop. I turned off and restarted the car and slowly drove to the Toyota garage six blocks away.
The representative test said they didn’t notice a problem when they test drove the car. I refused to drive the car again unless they fix that problem (which was not a figment of my imagination.) Our extended coverage was still in force at the time. The representative said they would change the relay. We left our car and picked it up when called that it was done (we were not shown the relay, took their word that it was changed).
We haven’t had another problem with the brakes since "Knock on Wood."
I heard they have identified the problem with brakes as a software problem on the (first generation) 2010 Prius and some Lexus (year or model unknown) vehicles. There was no mention of any plan to recall any of the 2nd generation Prius cars. My husband told me that maybe we just got a lemon.
Correction – sorry: I mean the 2010 Prius is Third Generation.
Yes, we have been taking it to the dealer for all it’s regular maintenance.
There was no ice. It seldom gets that cold in this part of the state. I’ve never encountered icy roads driving in the city. Also, the weather was in the mid 50′s.
We have always been treated well by the dealership and the service dept. is top notch; however, I agree that the company does not seem that concerned because uncontrolled acceleration and a lack of brakes are the most dangerous things that can happen to a car on the road putting not only passengers and drivers but everyone around the moving vehicle at risk.

I think that Toyota just announced a recall on the Prius that has something to do with the brakes. Call the Toyota dealership and ask them.

The first thing I would check is the brake fluid. Have you changed yours yet? Brake fluid should be changed about every 3-4 years, otherwise it will behave as you’ve experienced–it might also be (or have been) low. This happens in every car–nothing Prius specific.

it was all in your head and a freezing relay could cause something like that, regardless the car,but im sorry it was in your head, you thought the car wasn’t braking but it probably was just sliding on ice,

Interesting…this would indicate Toyota was aware of such problems over 5 years ago. They really are dishonest. I simply don’t trust them and won’t buy another toyota. Even if I buy a GM that brakes more often, I won’t be killed by the brakes.

the thing with the software is all wrong, toyota knows the problem and its not the software,if it was they would have just told everyone not to drive,or stop using cell or mp3,s,ive had my prius for a year and never had this issue,so to me its all media hype and wouldn’t worry,do you really think other car companies dont have safety issues?first you said it was a cold drizzy morning(perfect weather for ice)then you say there was no ice it was in the 50′s so i dont think you have your fact right, your just buying into the media hype like everyone else,HAY IVE HAD THIS CAR FOR A YEAR WITHOUT ANY BRAKE PROBLEMS BUT NOW IM WORRIED CAUSE TOYOTA RECALLED THE CAR<THEN EVERYONE SHOULD STOP BYING HONDA(FITS CATCH ON FIRE)FORDS(TIRES BLOW AND GAS PEDALS GET STUCK AS WELL)HYUNDAI(CHARGING STTEM CATCHES ON FIRE OR TRANNY SLIPS)do you see hwere im going with this, toyota is still the best in my book
