'98 toyota camry problems with hot start, dies when idling stumbles occasionally on acceleration?

The car has nearly 200k. Engine light is on for something emissions related. Any ideas?
Not my car, a friend of mine. He says it seems to run better when the ambient temperature is cool. Problem could have exisited for a while but never noticed it until this summer.

Both answers are right. It could be a number of things causing this- all of which can cause emissions-related issues. Have you had that car tuned up? ignition and timing issues are easy to fix and can cause your symptoms and tha check engine light. Many mechanics will disagree but I know from experience that sometimes just a tuneup could be the problem. I’m not saying that the answer to all of your problems but don’t dismiss it either. Replacing spark plugs, wires, air filters might solve your problem. If you still have the issue, consider the distributor cap and/ or fuel system service. Others could be more serious: dirty or damaged EGR valve, throttle body, catalytic converter, bad O2 sensor(s), etc. Get that car check out by a mechanic.
